Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Middle Persian nyšʾn' (/⁠nīšān⁠/); compare Parthian 𐫗𐫏𐫢𐫀𐫗 (nyšʾn /⁠nīšān⁠/), Persian نشان (nešân) and Hebrew נֵס (nes). Doublet of ܢܝܼܫܲܢܩܵܐ (nīšanqā, sign, signal).
