  1. (intransitive) to leave, retire from, quit (a club, organization, etc.; collocates with aus)
    Er ist aus dem Chor ausgetreten.
    He quit the choir.
  2. (transitive) to stamp out (fire, etc.)
    Habt ihr das Lagerfeuer ausgetreten?
    Did y'all stamp out the campfire?
  3. (intransitive, euphemistic) to spend a penny, see a man about a horse (often collocates with müssen)
    Entschuldigen Sie, ich muss kurz austreten.
    Excuse me, I have to spend a penny.
