From Pali vihāra(monastery) or Sanskrit विहार(vihāra, academy; sanctuary; temple); perhaps via Old Khmer vihāra(monastery). Compare Modern Khmer វិហារ(vĭhar); Lao ວິຫານ(wi hān).
