From Proto-Tai *paːkᴰ (mouth). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩣ᩠ᨠ, Lao ປາກ (pāk), Shan ပၢၵ်ႇ (pàak), ᦔᦱᧅ (ṗaak), Ahom 𑜆𑜀𑜫 (pak), Saek ป̄าก, Nong Zhuang baeg, Tai Nüa ᥙᥣᥐᥱ (pǎak), Zhuang bak. Compare Southern Kam bags (mouth), Proto-Be *ɓaːkᴰ¹ (mouth) (whence ɓak⁷ in modern lects). Compare also Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baqbaq (whence Cebuano baba, Eastern Cham ꨚꨝꩍ (pabah), Hawaiian waha).
