Proclitic form of تر (tar, “from”). Cognate with Ormuri تر (tar) (with the same functions) and Old Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬭𐬋 (tarō). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tr̥Hás (“through”), from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥h₂-ó-s, from *terh₂- (“to cross over”) + *-ós.
