EtymologyEdit

Uncertain. Two very different origins have been proposed:

  • From Basque aritz ona (good oak), from aritz (oak) + ona (good).
  • From O'odham alĭ ṣonak (small spring), from alĭ (small) ṣonak (spring).

The claim that it comes from Spanish árida (dry) and zona (zone) is folk etymology.
