From Proto-Vietic *bɔː (zebu; bovine). Probably ultimately of imitative origin.

Compare Vietnamese ụm bò (moo) and items such as Malay lembu, Khmu [Cuang] lmboʔ and Cebuano amba, which are superficially similar but lack straightforward correspondence with the Vietnamese word.
