Etymology 3

edit

First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 뎔〮 (Yale: tyél).

Possibly from Middle Chinese (MC tsrhaet), abbreviation of 剎多羅 (MC tsrhaet ta la), ultimately borrowed from Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra). Cognate with Japanese (tera, Buddhist temple), which has been thought to have been a borrowing from an ancient Koreanic language. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
