From Old Khmer កំម្នត៑ (kaṃmnat), កាំនត (kāṃnata, to appoint, to determine, to fix, to set; direction, instruction; note, record, reminder; observation, remark; etc), extended forms of Old Khmer កត៑ (kat), *កត៑ (*kat), កត (kata, to mark down; to note down; to record; to register), from which Thai กฎ (gòt) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer កំណត់ (kɑmnɑt).
