From Proto-Tai *ɲɤkᴰ (to raise). Cognate with Lao ຍົກ (nyok), ᦷᦍᧅ (yok), Shan ယုၵ်ႉ (yṵ̂k), Ahom 𑜊𑜤𑜀𑜫 (jʸuk), Northern Thai ᨿᩫ᩠ᨠ.
