Originally from the Classic of Poetry (《詩》), 《豳風·狼跋》:

狼跋其胡，載疐其尾。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, trad.]

Han Yu wrote in the 9th century:

然而公不見信於人，私不見助於友，跋前疐後，動輒得咎。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

Rán'ér gōng bù jiàn xìn yú rén, sī bù jiàn zhù yú yǒu, báqiánzhìhòu, dòngzhé dé jiù. [Pinyin]

Yet you, in public affairs, fail to gain the trust of others. In private, none of your friends are willing to help you. You go forward and step on your dewlap, and step back only to trip on your tail. As soon as you move at all, you incur fault upon yourself.
