Originally the same character as , used interchangeably. In oracle bone inscriptions, ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (adult) + (mouth) + (child) – to transmit knowledge. In western Zhou bronze inscriptions, started being added. As time went by, corrupted into , into (OC *hliʔ), and into , giving rise to the form seen in the Shuowen Jiezi (𥏼). The component was dropped around the Western Han, arriving at the modern form.

Now a Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ʔl'es) : phonetic (OC *ʔl'e) + semantic .

Etymology
