Glyph origin

edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *brenʔ) : phonetic (OC *prenʔ, *brenʔ) + semantic (say). However, the phonetic component (which is the reduplication of the Kangxi radical of the knife to mark prisoners) perhaps symbolizes two prisoners accusing each other, hence "debating in an aggressive manner".

Etymology

edit

Cognate with (OC *breːns, *brenʔ, “to distinguish”).
