西

Glyph origin edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) : semantic (door) + phonetic 西. Compare 𨳊, 𨳍, 𨶙.

Etymology edit

Perhaps a substrate loan. Compare Proto-Tai *hiːᴬ (vagina), whence Thai หี (hǐi).

Alternatively, Bauer (1991) proposes that it is related to : *mai > *bai (cf. Min Nan 膣屄 tsi1 bai1) > *phai (cf. Chengdu phi1) > *hai. Also compare Tibeto-Burman words: Tangkhul Naga hai (vulva), Mru [script needed] (kai, vagina; vulva), Bodo (India) [script needed] (ki ʈuʔ, vagina).
