Etymology

From ทอง (tɔɔng, “gold”) +‎ แผ่น (pɛ̀n, “sheet”) +‎ เดียวกัน (diao-gan, “one; same”); literally "same sheet of gold"; believed to have originated from the tradition of writing royal messages on gold sheets to be sent to foreign states.
