editSimplified from 證 (登 → 正). Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *tjeŋs) : semantic 言 (“speech”) + phonetic 正 (OC *tjeŋ, *tjeŋs). The character originally conveyed the meaning of "to admonish" and was later used in the sense of "proof" or "evidence."[1]
