Contraction of I am.

Pronunciation edit

Contraction edit

I’m

  1. Contraction of I am.

Usage notes edit

The contraction I'm is not used when the word am would fall at the end of a clause. For example, in response to the question "Are you okay?", the reply "Yes, I'm okay" is widely used, while "Yes, I'm" (as a complete sentence) or even "Yes, I'm, but..." are never used, and would always be said as "Yes, I am" or "Yes, I am, but..." respectively.

Synonyms edit

  • am (informal or dialectal)
  • cham (West Country, obsolete)
