EtymologyEdit

The two pronunciations are ultimately cognate, derived from a root meaning "to join, to come together ~ to meet, to gather ~ to match, to fit - to understand". Perhaps related to ("to match") ~ ("lid").

Graphically: Ideogrammic compound (會意):  +  - a lid on top of an ancient double boiler.
