Etymology
edit(Macau): First attested in 陳末議以保海隅萬世治安疏, a memorial to the emperor [1564] by government official Pang Shangpeng (龐尚鵬):
- 廣州南有香山縣,地當瀕海。由雍麥至蠔鏡澳,計一日之程,有山對峙如臺,曰南北臺。即澳門也……議者欲於澳門狹處,用石填塞,杜番舶潛行,以固香山門戶。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

- Guǎngzhōu nán yǒu Xiāngshān xiàn, dì dāng bīn hǎi. Yóu yōngmài zhì Háojìng'ào, jì yīrì zhī chéng, yǒu shān Duìzhì rú tái, yuē nánběi tái. Jí Àomén yě...... Yì zhě yù yú Àomén xiá chù, yòng shí tiánsài, dù fānbó qiánxíng, yǐ gù Xiāngshān ménhù. [Pinyin]
