Usage notesEdit

  • In Mandarin, whilst 東西/东西 can mean thing in either a physical or abstract sense, 事情 (shìqíng) only means thing in an abstract sense.
  • Unlike Mandarin, 東西/东西 does not mean something or thing in Min Nan. Use 物件 (mi̍h-kiāⁿ) or 物仔 (mih-á) instead. For thing in the abstract sense, use 代誌代志 (tāi-chì).
